Alfa Laval Breaks New Ground with China’s First Ammonia Fuel Supply System
In a bold move that signals the future of maritime tech, Swedish marine innovation powerhouse Alfa Laval has clinched its first contract for an ammonia fuel supply system (FSS) in China. The deal, struck with Chinese shipowner Tianjin Southwest Maritime (TSM), will see Alfa Laval’s cutting-edge FCM Ammonia system installed on seven ammonia dual-fuel LPG/ammonia carriers. This isn’t just a win for Alfa Laval—it’s a seismic shift for the maritime industry’s race toward decarbonization.
The FCM Ammonia system, a modular marvel designed to handle ammonia’s unique challenges, will be integrated into vessels at the CSSC Huangpu Wenchong shipyard. The rollout will begin with three 25,000 cubic meter (cbm) carriers, followed by four larger 41,000 cbm vessels. The first unit is slated for delivery by the end of 2025, marking a critical milestone in the industry’s transition to low-carbon fuels.
Why Ammonia? The Fuel of the Future
Ammonia is no longer just a household cleaner—it’s emerging as a game-changer in the quest for sustainable shipping. With international shipping volumes projected to double by 2050, the maritime sector is under immense pressure to slash emissions. Ammonia, a zero-carbon fuel when produced using renewable energy, is stepping into the spotlight as a viable alternative to traditional fossil fuels. Alfa Laval’s FCM Ammonia system is a key enabler, combining a fuel supply system, an ammonia release mitigation system, and a fuel valve train to ensure safe and efficient operations.
“This isn’t just about building a product; it’s about building a future,” says Peter Sahlen, Head of Marine Separation, Fuel Supply System & Heat Transfer at Alfa Laval. “Our expertise with methanol and LPG has given us a head start with ammonia, and this contract validates our commitment to driving decarbonization with reliable, innovative solutions.”
Collaboration is Key: Alfa Laval’s Strategic Edge
Alfa Laval isn’t going it alone. The company has been collaborating with Swiss engine designer WinGD, delivering two test fuel supply systems for ammonia-fueled engines last year. These partnerships are critical in accelerating the development of next-gen maritime tech. By leveraging its deep industry knowledge and strategic alliances, Alfa Laval is positioning itself as a leader in the green shipping revolution.
This contract isn’t just a win for Alfa Laval—it’s a win for the planet. As the maritime industry grapples with the urgent need to reduce emissions, solutions like the FCM Ammonia system are paving the way for a cleaner, greener future. With ammonia poised to play a starring role in the decarbonization playbook, Alfa Laval’s breakthrough in China is a harbinger of what’s to come.
