Clearway Energy Group Launches Honeycomb: A Game-Changer in Grid-Enhancing Battery Storage
In a bold move that’s set to redefine energy storage in the American West, Clearway Energy Group has kicked off construction on its Honeycomb portfolio—a cutting-edge suite of four battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Utah. Each project, clocking in at 80 MW, will leverage Tesla’s state-of-the-art four-hour batteries, collectively amassing a staggering 1280 MWh of dispatchable power. This isn’t just a win for Utah; it’s a quantum leap for grid stability and renewable energy integration nationwide.
“Utah has been a cornerstone of our clean energy operations since 2008, and Honeycomb is the next evolution of that commitment,” said Steve Ryder, Clearway’s CFO. “With this portfolio, we’re not just investing in Utah’s grid—we’re turbocharging its energy security and economic resilience.” The Honeycomb projects will expand Clearway’s Utah fleet to a whopping 869 MW, solidifying the state’s position as a renewable energy powerhouse.
Powering the Future: Partnerships and Innovation
Honeycomb isn’t just a tech marvel—it’s a collaborative triumph. Clearway has inked a 20-year toll agreement with PacifiCorp, ensuring the utility has access to reliable, dispatchable power. To bankroll this $605 million endeavor, Clearway assembled a dream team of financial heavyweights, including KeyBanc Capital Markets, CoBank, and Bank of America. The construction phase, led by Rosendin, will create up to 50 high-paying jobs, with 15% of the work hours going to apprentices—proof that innovation and community impact can go hand in hand.
“Beaver County is at the forefront of renewable energy innovation,” said Jen Wakeland, Strategic Development Director in Beaver County. “By integrating advanced storage solutions like Honeycomb, we’re maximizing the value of our renewable resources while ensuring long-term sustainability for our communities.” Once operational, the projects are projected to inject $60 million into local coffers through property and sales taxes, funding everything from schools to hospitals.
Why Honeycomb Matters: A Blueprint for the Energy Transition
Honeycomb isn’t just another energy project—it’s a blueprint for the future. By pairing solar energy with cutting-edge battery storage, Clearway is addressing one of the biggest challenges in the renewable energy sector: intermittency. The ability to store and dispatch power on demand is a game-changer, ensuring that clean energy can meet demand even when the sun isn’t shining. With commercial operations slated for 2026, Honeycomb is poised to set a new standard for grid resilience and sustainability.
“Utah has always been a leader in energy innovation,” said U.S. Senator John Curtis (R-UT). “Projects like Honeycomb are proof that we can strengthen our economy and protect our environment at the same time.”
As the energy landscape continues to evolve, Clearway’s Honeycomb portfolio stands as a testament to what’s possible when innovation, collaboration, and vision converge.
