In a bold move that combines cutting-edge marine technology with precision engineering, Dutch firm Marine Masters has been entrusted with the monumental task of installing two offshore wellhead platforms in the Gulf of Kutch, India. This high-stakes project, commissioned by SunPetro—India’s second-largest private oil producer—promises to reshape the region’s energy landscape. Here’s how the Netherlands-based experts are gearing up to make waves in the offshore oil industry.

The Mission: Installing Bhasker A and B Platforms

Marine Masters, a leader in salvage, transport, and offshore installation, has been tapped to oversee the installation of the Bhasker A and B platforms. These greenfield structures, designed and built by SunPetro, are no ordinary oil platforms. Each jacket weighs a staggering 800 tons, requiring meticulous planning and execution. The project involves lifting and mooring the jackets, installing piles, and creating a specialized platform for subsea operations.

The Dutch firm has chartered the Conquest MB1, a heavy-lift barge equipped with two mobile cranes capable of lifting 180 tons and 500 tons respectively. With a total lifting capacity of 1,400 tons, this state-of-the-art vessel is the linchpin of the operation, ensuring that every phase of the project is carried out safely and efficiently.

Why This Project Matters

The Bhasker-III field, located 50 kilometers west of Okha city in Gujarat, is a game-changer for India’s energy sector. Currently classified as a Category II basin, it has yet to produce commercial hydrocarbons. However, the successful installation of these platforms could elevate the basin to Category I status, marking a significant milestone in India’s quest for energy independence.

SunPetro secured the field in 2022 under the DSF-III bid round, with 100% participating interest. The area spans 1,456 square kilometers and includes eleven Tertiary and three Mesozoic discoveries. With extensive 2D and 3D seismic data already in place, the stage is set for a transformative leap in hydrocarbon production.

The Dutch Touch: Precision Meets Innovation

Henk Smith, Co-founder and Partner at Marine Masters, emphasized the company’s commitment to excellence: “We are honored to support Sun Petro, ACE Pipeline, and CSS in this challenging, high-profile project. The deployment of the Conquest MB1 exemplifies our dedication to leveraging advanced marine technology and operational expertise.”

The Conquest MB1 is currently en route to Mumbai, with an expected arrival date of March 7, 2025. After completing mobilization activities, the vessel will head to the offshore site, 110 nautical miles south of Kandla, India. The installation work is slated for completion by May 15, 2025, setting the stage for commercial hydrocarbon production in the region.

What’s Next for Marine Masters?

Once the Bhasker project wraps up, the Conquest MB1 will remain in the region, ready to tackle other complex offshore challenges. Whether it’s salvage, decommissioning, or transport and installation projects, Marine Masters is poised to continue its legacy of innovation and precision in the offshore energy sector.
