Monster Foundations Land in Eemshaven: RWE’s Offshore Wind Ambitions Take Shape
In a bold move to supercharge Germany’s renewable energy grid, RWE has just unloaded the first batch of colossal foundations for its Nordseecluster offshore wind project in Eemshaven, the Netherlands. These behemoths, each stretching 85 meters and tipping the scales at a staggering 1,500 tons—equivalent to 1,000 compact cars—are the building blocks of what will soon become one of the most ambitious wind energy projects in Europe. Manufactured by Dajin Heavy Industry, these monopile foundations are the unsung heroes of the green energy revolution, designed to anchor wind turbines and a transformer substation in the unforgiving waters of the German North Sea.
Thomas Michel, RWE Offshore Wind’s Chief Operating Officer, couldn’t hide his excitement: “This is a pivotal moment for the Nordseecluster. With a total capacity of 1.6 gigawatts, it’s the largest wind project off Germany’s coast. Eemshaven’s state-of-the-art port infrastructure and massive storage capacity make it the perfect hub for this operation. We’re also leveraging synergies here by managing foundations for our Danish Thor project and future Dutch OranjeWind initiative.”
Eemshaven: The Nerve Center of Offshore Wind Innovation
Eemshaven isn’t just a port—it’s a sprawling, 260,000-square-meter logistics powerhouse. This Dutch hub is where the Nordseecluster’s foundations will be staged before being shipped 50 kilometers north of Juist Island for installation. The project is being rolled out in two phases: Nordseecluster A, with a capacity of 660 megawatts, will see 44 turbines erected by 2027, while Nordseecluster B will add another 900 megawatts from 60 turbines by 2029. Together, they’ll generate enough clean energy to power 1.6 million homes, a game-changer for Germany’s energy transition.
