Scotland’s renewable energy landscape is set for a major boost as OnPath Energy takes a giant leap forward with its Mill Rig wind farm project. With key contractors now onboard, this ambitious onshore wind farm is poised to deliver clean energy, economic growth, and community benefits on an impressive scale.
A Green Energy Milestone in the Making
Nestled near Darvel, straddling the South Lanarkshire and East Ayrshire border, the Mill Rig wind farm is a six-turbine project that’s been in the works since securing planning permission in 2022. After completing extensive site investigations last year, OnPath Energy has now locked in three major players to bring this vision to life.
Glasgow-based R J McLeod will handle the balance of plant contract, covering everything from civil engineering to cabling and off-site highway construction. Meanwhile, global turbine giant Nordex will supply and install cutting-edge N163.5/X turbines, towering up to 200 meters tall. Rounding out the team is energy consultancy Natural Power, which will oversee construction management from its newly opened Glasgow office.
Clean Energy, Stronger Communities
The Mill Rig wind farm isn’t just about generating power—it’s about powering progress. With an installed capacity of 33.4 MW, the project will produce enough electricity to meet the annual needs of over 45,000 homes. But the benefits don’t stop there.
The project is set to inject £91 million into the local economy, supporting around 300 jobs directly and countless more through the supply chain. A dedicated community fund will also deliver up to £167,000 annually to local charities and groups, totaling £5 million over the wind farm’s 30-year lifespan. Additionally, £450,000 will be invested in local training and employment opportunities during the first five years of operation.
A Vision for a Net-Zero Future
Martin Kellerman, Construction Director at OnPath Energy, emphasized the project’s broader impact: “Mill Rig will bring environmental, energy security, and community benefits to the area, while contributing to Scotland’s net-zero ambitions. With trusted partners like R J McLeod, Natural Power, and Nordex, we’re confident in delivering one of the UK’s most efficient wind farms.”
Construction is set to kick off before Easter, with turbine delivery scheduled for autumn. The project is on track for completion by spring 2026, marking a significant step forward in Scotland’s renewable energy journey.
