A New Hydrocarbon Treasure Unearthed
Norwegian energy titan Equinor has struck gold—or rather, gas—off the coast of Norway. Using Odfjell Drilling’s state-of-the-art Deepsea Atlantic rig, the company has uncovered a significant gas and condensate reservoir in the Mistral exploration well. This discovery, located in the southern Norwegian Sea, is already being hailed as a potential game-changer for the region’s energy landscape.
The Mistral well, drilled to a staggering depth of 4,024 meters, revealed a 47-meter-thick gas/condensate column within a 99-meter-thick Jurassic sandstone layer. Early estimates suggest recoverable oil equivalents of 19 to 44 million barrels, making this one of the most promising finds in recent years.
A Collaborative Effort with Big Players
The discovery is the result of a collaborative effort between Equinor and its partners, including OKEA, Pandion Energy, and DNO Norge. OKEA, which holds a 20% stake in the project, confirmed the find after securing its interest through a strategic stake exchange with DNO. The PL1119 license group, led by Equinor (50% interest), is now evaluating the commercial viability of the discovery.
With existing infrastructure in the area, the team is exploring tie-back options to maximize efficiency and reduce development costs.
