Imagine a luxury resort where turquoise waters meet cutting-edge renewable energy. That’s exactly what’s happening in the Maldives, where Singapore-based Canopy Power is turning sun-soaked lagoons into powerhouses of sustainability. With floating solar panels and massive battery storage systems, the company is helping luxury resorts slash diesel use and embrace a greener future.

Floating Solar: The Future of Island Energy

Canopy Power has already made waves with its renewable energy installations at Soneva Jani and Soneva Fushi, two of the Maldives’ most exclusive resorts. The systems include 5.2 MWp of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and 4.7 MWh of battery storage, meeting 50% of the resorts’ electricity needs. This isn’t just a win for sustainability—it’s a game-changer for the environment. The project is expected to cut diesel consumption by a staggering 2 million liters annually and reduce carbon emissions by 5,000 tons each year.

But Canopy Power isn’t stopping there. Their next project, at Soneva Secret, will feature a 2 MWp floating solar array paired with 3 MWh of battery storage. Once operational, this system will push renewable energy penetration to an impressive 90%, making it the largest floating solar project in the Maldives.

A Partnership for Progress

The success of these projects is a testament to collaboration. Canopy Power worked closely with Yonsan Engineering to design, source, and implement the systems in just six months. And the company isn’t slowing down. In February, Canopy Power joined forces with Norway’s Ocean Sun to expand floating solar deployment in Australia, tackling land and water constraints while boosting renewable energy solutions.

“Soneva sets a high standard of sustainability in the Maldives,” Canopy Power shared in a recent social media post. “With 5.2 MWp of solar PV and 4.7 MWh of battery storage, 50% of their electricity now comes from renewable sources. And at Soneva Secret, we’re taking it even further.”

A Blueprint for Sustainable Luxury

Canopy Power’s floating solar projects are more than just technical achievements—they’re a blueprint for the future of sustainable tourism. By integrating renewable energy into luxury resorts, the company is proving that high-end hospitality and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.

“This will be a game-changer,” Canopy Power said of the Soneva Secret project. “It’s revolutionizing sustainable energy in the hospitality industry.”

As the world looks for innovative ways to combat climate change, the Maldives is leading the charge—one floating solar panel at a time.
