A Bold Vision for Clean Energy

London-based tech innovator H2Terminals is making waves—literally—with its ambitious offshore energy island project in the North Sea. The company has inked a groundbreaking deal to supply green hydrogen to industrial users across London and the Thames Estuary, marking a significant step toward a zero-carbon future.

In a landmark move, H2Terminals has partnered with Cadent, the UK’s leading gas distribution network, to deliver hydrogen through the East London Hydrogen Pipeline. Slated for completion by 2030, this cutting-edge pipeline will link hydrogen production hubs near Tilbury and the Thames Enterprise Park to industrial hubs in East London. The hydrogen will be produced using renewable energy sources like wind, wave, and solar power, making it a truly green solution for the city’s energy needs.

From Sea to City: The Hydrogen Supply Chain

The process is as futuristic as it sounds. Hydrogen will be generated at H2Terminals’ offshore energy island in the North Sea’s 56th Quadrant, where renewable energy will power the production process. Once produced, the hydrogen will be liquefied and transported via specialized vessels to terminals along the Thames Estuary. From there, Cadent’s East London Hydrogen Pipeline will distribute the clean fuel to industrial users, creating a seamless supply chain that’s both efficient and eco-friendly.

This isn’t just a pipe dream—H2Terminals has already laid the groundwork for this revolutionary project. Last year, the company, alongside partners HiDROGEN and D3IM, collaborated with Lloyd’s Register to assess the feasibility of floating hydrogen production and transport. The partnership also focused on identifying regulatory requirements, safety protocols, and risk assessments to ensure the project’s success.

A Game-Changer for London’s Industrial Sector

Gerry Wilkinson, CEO of H2Terminals, describes the partnership with Cadent as a “watershed moment” for green hydrogen infrastructure in London. “By combining our innovative production capabilities with Cadent’s world-class network, we’re not just delivering cost-effective hydrogen solutions—we’re accelerating the industrial transformation needed to combat climate change,” he said.

Kelly Manders, Project Manager for the East London Pipeline, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the collaborative nature of the initiative. “H2Terminals joins a growing number of producers committed to supplying green hydrogen through our network. Together, we’re building the foundation for a zero-carbon industrial revolution in East London,” she added.

Insuring the Future of Green Shipping

But the innovation doesn’t stop at production and distribution. H2Terminals is also working with the London P&I Club, a marine liability insurer, to develop tailored insurance solutions for shipping green hydrogen. These solutions will cover the company’s fleet of hydrogen-powered vessels, its patented liquid hydrogen storage systems, and advanced features like onboard fuel cells and autonomous operations.

This holistic approach ensures that every step of the hydrogen supply chain—from production to delivery—is secure, sustainable, and scalable.
