A Decade-Long Partnership in the Making

In a move that signals a seismic shift in the energy storage sector, Odfjell Terminals Korea (OTK) has inked a groundbreaking ten-year contract with South Korean oil giant S-Oil. The deal, centered around OTK’s Ulsan terminal expansion project, codenamed E5, will see three massive 23,990 cubic-meter (cbm) tanks dedicated to storing S-Oil’s output. This agreement formalizes a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed just three months ago, marking a new chapter in the collaboration between these two industry heavyweights.

The tanks will play a critical role in supporting S-Oil’s ambitious $7 billion Shaheen project, a state-of-the-art crude-to-chemical facility under construction near OTK’s Ulsan terminal. Once operational, the E5 expansion will be directly linked to Shaheen via pipeline, enabling seamless exports to global markets.

A Game-Changer for Northeast Asia’s Energy Sector

Adrian Lenning, Managing Director of Odfjell Terminals, emphasized the significance of the deal: “This long-term agreement not only strengthens our partnership with S-Oil but also opens the door to new business opportunities in the Ulsan region. The Shaheen project is a catalyst for increased production capacity and trade flows, and we’re proud to be at the forefront of this transformation.”

The E5 expansion is slated to kick off in the first half of 2025, with the new tanks expected to be operational by late 2026. This timeline aligns perfectly with the surging demand for storage solutions in Northeast Asia, a region increasingly pivotal in the global energy market.

Expanding Capacity, Expanding Horizons

The E5 project isn’t just about three tanks—it’s a bold vision for the future. The expansion will introduce a new tank pit equipped with ten 87,940 cbm carbon steel storage tanks. Once completed, OTK’s total storage capacity will soar by 28%, surpassing 400,000 cbm. This leap forward underscores OTK’s commitment to meeting the evolving needs of the energy sector.

Meanwhile, Odfjell’s drilling arm, Odfjell Drilling, continues to make waves globally. Recent discoveries off the coast of Norway and Namibia, facilitated by Odfjell-managed rigs like Deepsea Atlantic and Deepsea Mira, highlight the company’s dual focus on storage and exploration.

Why This Matters

This partnership isn’t just a win for Odfjell and S-Oil—it’s a win for the entire energy ecosystem. By combining cutting-edge infrastructure with strategic collaboration, the two companies are setting a new standard for efficiency and innovation in the oil and gas industry.
