In a groundbreaking move for the energy sector, Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has launched the hull of PFLNG Tiga, a colossal floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility destined to become the crown jewel of Malaysia’s Petronas fleet. This engineering marvel is set to revolutionize offshore gas production and solidify Malaysia’s position as a global leader in low-carbon energy.
A New Era of Offshore Energy
The PFLNG Tiga, ordered by Petronas in December 2022, is the third FLNG unit in the Malaysian energy giant’s fleet. Built in collaboration with Japan’s JGC Corporation, this facility is a testament to cutting-edge engineering and innovation. Measuring a staggering 281 meters in length, 64 meters in width, and 32 meters in depth, the PFLNG Tiga is a floating behemoth—2.5 times larger than a standard soccer field. With a launching weight of approximately 50,000 tons, it’s no wonder this project is being hailed as a game-changer.
Adif Zulkifli, Executive Vice President & CEO of Petronas’ Gas & Maritime Business, emphasized the facility’s significance: “This FLNG will not only provide an optimized route for offshore gas development but also help enhance Malaysia’s position as a leader in low-carbon energy.”
Engineering Marvels and Challenges Ahead
The PFLNG Tiga is more than just a floating structure; it’s a complex ecosystem of advanced technology. Once operational in May 2027, it will produce 2.1 million tonnes of gas annually off the coast of Sabah, Malaysia. But getting there is no small feat.
After the hull launch, SHI will moor the facility to the quay and begin the intricate process of manufacturing and loading the hull interior, LNG storage tanks, and upper-level plant equipment. The most daunting task? Installing a 40,000-ton topside facility using an offshore crane capable of lifting 9,000 tons. SHI and JGC plan to complete the manufacture and loading of 11 modules, each weighing between 2,000 and 7,000 tons, by February 2027.
Ahn Youngkyu, Head of SHI’s Marine Business Division, is confident that the PFLNG Tiga will set a new benchmark for FLNG units. “We’ve maintained overwhelming competitiveness in this sector, securing orders for five out of nine FLNGs worldwide,” he said.
A Strategic Move in a Competitive Market
The launch of PFLNG Tiga comes at a pivotal moment for Petronas, which recently announced a new licensing round encompassing five exploration blocks and three discovered resource opportunities (DROs). This move underscores the company’s commitment to expanding its energy portfolio and leveraging cutting-edge technology to meet global demand.
As the world shifts toward cleaner energy solutions, projects like PFLNG Tiga are paving the way for a more sustainable future. With its massive scale, advanced engineering, and strategic importance, this floating giant is poised to make waves in the energy industry for years to come.
