Seaspan Doubles Down on Green Shipping With Massive New Orders
From Mega-Containerships to Bunkering Behemoths
Seaspan Corporation just made waves in the maritime industry with a pair of high-profile deals. On May 20, 2025, the containership giant signed a letter of intent (LOI) with China’s Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding for eight 8,300 TEU containerships and a groundbreaking 18,600 cbm bunkering vessel. The signing coincided with Hudong-Zhonghua’s LNG carrier launches and the keel-laying ceremony for PIL’s 13,000 TEU ship—a busy day for the Shanghai shipyard.
“These vessels represent the next frontier in sustainable shipping,” said a CSSC spokesperson. “The 8,300 TEU class isn’t just a workhorse—it’s a leap forward in efficiency.”
The 8,300 TEU ships, designed for both feeder routes and ocean crossings, pack cutting-edge green tech under the hood. CSSC highlights their energy-efficient propulsion systems and optimized hull designs, which slash fuel consumption and emissions. Meanwhile, the 18,600 cbm bunkering vessel—now the world’s largest V3.0-type LNG bunkering ship—boasts 30% lower emissions than older models, a critical upgrade as ports tighten environmental rules.
A Shipping Spree With 2027 Deliveries
This isn’t Seaspan’s only move this month. Just weeks earlier, the company inked a deal for six 11,400 TEU scrubber-fitted containerships with Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS). Slated for delivery between 2027 and 2028, these vessels will join Seaspan’s fleet as mid-sized contenders with built-in exhaust scrubbers to meet sulfur cap regulations. The back-to-back orders signal Seaspan’s aggressive bet on the post-2025 shipping rebound.
“Scrubber tech lets operators hedge against fuel price swings,” noted a Clarksons analyst. “Seaspan’s playing the long game.”
While the article shifts gears to tout MASCOT’s offshore safety gear (because even shipbuilders need hard hats), the real story is Seaspan’s fleet expansion. With 14 new ships on order—ranging from nimble 8,300 TEU units to bunkering giants—the company is positioning itself as a leader in the green shipping revolution. As carbon taxes loom and customers demand cleaner logistics, Seaspan’s dual focus on scale and sustainability might just set the industry standard.
