The future of renewable energy is cresting on the horizon, and French wave energy developer Seaturns is leading the charge. After successfully completing sea trials of its innovative wave energy technology, the company is now poised to revolutionize the way we harness the ocean’s power. With full-scale testing on the horizon, Seaturns is making waves—literally—in the clean energy sector.
From Prototype to Powerhouse
Seaturns has been making steady progress toward its goal of commercializing wave energy technology. In October 2023, the company deployed a 1/4-scale prototype at the IFREMER test site in Brest, France. Over 18 months, the prototype was subjected to rigorous real-world conditions, including waves, wind, tides, and even the fury of Storm Ciarán, which brought wave heights equivalent to 15 meters at full scale.
The trials were conducted in two phases: first, testing a simplified system, and then integrating an air turbine to generate electricity. The energy produced was transmitted to shore via an export cable, proving the system’s viability in harsh marine environments.
A Design Built for the Future
Seaturns’ wave energy converter (WEC) is a marvel of engineering, designed with cost efficiency, ease of installation, and minimal environmental impact in mind. The cylindrical WEC uses a patented anchoring system to convert horizontal wave motion into a pitching motion. Inside the device, a water pendulum and air chambers create airflow that drives a turbine, which in turn generates electricity.
The company’s focus on rational design, optimized manufacturing, and simplified maintenance has set it apart from competitors. “These strategic choices will significantly reduce production and operating costs compared with competing technologies,” Seaturns stated.
What’s Next for Seaturns?
The next phase of Seaturns’ journey will involve full-scale testing at the SEM-REV test site in the Pays-de-la-Loire region of France, managed by the OPEN-C Foundation. This will allow the company to assess the system’s performance under offshore conditions and move closer to commercialization.
With its innovative approach and commitment to sustainability, Seaturns is not just riding the waves—it’s creating them. The company’s technology has the potential to transform the renewable energy landscape, offering a cleaner, more efficient alternative to fossil fuels.
