In a bold move to accelerate the maritime industry’s transition to renewable energy, Hong Kong-based shipowner Wah Kwong has joined forces with clean energy giant CIMC ENRIC. This groundbreaking partnership aims to pioneer green methanol bunkering solutions, setting the stage for a cleaner, more sustainable future for global shipping.

A Strategic Alliance for Sustainable Shipping

On February 26, 2025, Wah Kwong and CIMC ENRIC inked a landmark agreement to collaborate on renewable fuel projects, with a particular focus on green methanol. This partnership will see Wah Kwong take on the role of offtaker and logistics partner, handling downstream operations and delivering green methanol from shore tanks to customers. Meanwhile, CIMC ENRIC will focus on production, ensuring compliance with stringent ISCC and EU regulations.

The collaboration is a testament to the growing urgency for the maritime sector to decarbonize. As Hing Chao, Executive Chairman of Wah Kwong Maritime Transport, put it, “As the marine transition gathers pace, it is increasingly important we forge pioneering new partnerships to invest, produce, and deliver the products and services our industry needs to decarbonize.”

Green Methanol: The Fuel of Tomorrow

At the heart of this partnership is green methanol, a renewable fuel that promises to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of shipping. CIMC ENRIC is currently developing a state-of-the-art 50,000 million tons per annum (mtpa) green methanol plant in Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province. Strategically located to serve the Greater Bay Area (GBA), Southern China, and Southeast Asia, the plant is expected to go live in the second half of 2025.

This facility will not only supply green methanol but also act as a hub for innovation in renewable energy logistics. The partnership will initially focus on piloting green methanol bunkering operations in the GBA, with plans to expand globally as the technology matures.

A Shared Vision for a Greener Future

Both companies bring unique strengths to the table. Wah Kwong’s expertise in vessel management and operational logistics complements CIMC ENRIC’s prowess in clean energy production. As Leo Yang, Executive Director and President of CIMC ENRIC, noted, “This collaboration marks a significant step for CIMC ENRIC’s green methanol business, transitioning from production layout to achieving full-chain commercialization.”

The partnership also opens the door to potential joint investments, further solidifying their commitment to driving the global energy transition. With the maritime industry under increasing pressure to reduce emissions, this alliance couldn’t have come at a better time.
