The Backbone of Renewable Energy: Subsea Cables Under the Microscope
In a bold move to secure Denmark’s renewable energy future, global quality assurance leader Intertek has completed a groundbreaking risk assessment for five critical export cables. These cables are set to connect massive offshore wind farms in the North and Baltic Seas to the Danish mainland, forming the backbone of the country’s ambitious green energy transition.
The project, commissioned by Danish transmission system operator Energinet, focuses on the North Sea I, Kattegat, and Kriegers Flak II offshore wind sites. Together, these sites could generate a staggering 6 GW of clean energy—enough to power millions of homes. But with great power comes great responsibility, and ensuring the long-term reliability of these subsea cables is no small feat.
Mapping the Risks: From Seabed to Surface
Intertek’s team of experts conducted a comprehensive Cable Burial Risk Assessment, analyzing potential threats to the cables’ integrity over their operational lifetime. Using cutting-edge bathymetric, geophysical, and geotechnical data, alongside vessel and fishing activity insights, the team mapped out risks such as anchor strikes and fishing gear interactions.
The findings? A detailed roadmap for burying the cables at optimal depths to minimize risks. “It’s not just about laying cables—it’s about ensuring they stay safe and functional for decades,” says an Intertek spokesperson. The study also evaluated various installation methods, factoring in seabed conditions to recommend the most effective approach for each site.
A Green Energy Vision Hits a Snag
While the technical groundwork is solid, Denmark’s offshore wind ambitions have faced unexpected hurdles. Despite launching tenders for the North Sea I, Kattegat, and Kriegers Flak II projects in 2024, the Danish Energy Agency (DEA) received no bids for the North Sea sites. By early 2025, the DEA suspended tenders for Hesselø, Kattegat II, and Kriegers Flak II, citing challenges with the no-subsidy model under current market conditions.
This setback highlights the complexities of scaling renewable energy infrastructure. Yet, with Intertek’s risk assessment paving the way, the groundwork is laid for future success. As the world races toward net-zero goals, Denmark’s offshore wind projects remain a beacon of innovation—and a testament to the importance of meticulous planning.
