Langh Ship’s Eco-Friendly Feeder Vessels: A Bold Leap into Maritime Innovation

Finnish shipping powerhouse Langh Ship is making waves in the maritime industry with the arrival of its first next-gen, eco-friendly 1,200 TEU container feeder ship. Dubbed *Ingrid*, this cutting-edge vessel is the first of three green ships set to revolutionize short-sea shipping. The naming ceremony, held at the PaxOcean shipyard in Zhoushan, China, on March 15, 2025, marked a milestone in Langh Ship’s mission to decarbonize the seas.

Designed in collaboration with the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI), *Ingrid* is a marvel of modern engineering. Optimized for 45-foot containers, the vessel boasts a sleek, 150-meter-long hull and a 27-meter beam, striking the perfect balance between cargo capacity and energy efficiency. But what truly sets this ship apart is its innovative hatch cover system. Unlike traditional designs, *Ingrid*’s hatch covers can be opened in three sections, allowing for unparalleled accessibility to cargo holds—even when only partial unloading is required. Add to that adjustable cell guides in the cargo holds, which can switch between 40’ and 45’ container positions, and you’ve got a vessel that’s as flexible as it is efficient.

Green Tech Meets Maritime Muscle

Langh Ship isn’t just pushing boundaries with design—it’s redefining what it means to be a green vessel. Powered by a two-stroke, slow-speed main engine, *Ingrid* is a fuel-sipping powerhouse. But the real game-changer lies in the suite of green tech solutions developed by Langh Tech, Langh Ship’s sister company. At the heart of this eco-revolution is a hybrid scrubber system that operates continuously in closed-loop mode, slashing emissions without downtime. And that’s just the beginning.

The ship is also primed for Langh Tech’s onboard carbon capture system, a groundbreaking innovation that captures CO2 from exhaust gases and converts it into sodium carbonate. This circular approach not only reduces the ship’s CO2 emissions by 20-50% but also creates a valuable byproduct for industrial use. Even better? The system is compatible with biofuels, paving the way for zero-emission shipping in the near future. Talk about a win-win for the planet and the bottom line.

Future-Proofing the Fleet

Langh Ship isn’t stopping at carbon capture. *Ingrid* is equipped with a state-of-the-art ballast water management system (BWMS) and even has a reserved space for onboard batteries—a nod to the company’s commitment to exploring electrification. This forward-thinking approach extends to Langh Ship’s broader fleet. Last year, the company completed its eco-friendly multipurpose (MPP) series with the launch of *Sofia*, a 7,800 dwt vessel designed to transport stainless steel coils for Finnish manufacturer Outokumpu. Together, these ships are setting a new standard for sustainable shipping.

As the maritime industry grapples with the urgent need to decarbonize, Langh Ship is proving that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand. With *Ingrid* leading the charge, the future of green shipping looks brighter than ever.
