Lamprell and Dong Fang Offshore Team Up for Next-Gen Wind Turbine Installation Vessel
A New Powerhouse for Asia Pacific’s Offshore Wind Boom
Offshore wind just got a major boost in the Asia Pacific region. Lamprell, the UAE-based energy fabricator, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Dong Fang Offshore (DFO) to build a cutting-edge NG-9000X wind turbine installation and maintenance vessel. Designed to handle next-generation turbines, this vessel is poised to become a linchpin for offshore projects across Taiwan and beyond.
“This collaboration aligns perfectly with APAC’s growing demand for renewable energy infrastructure,” said Lamprell CEO Ian Prescott. “It underscores our commitment to the global energy transition.”
The vessel, engineered by GustoMSC, is no ordinary workhorse. It’s equipped with a heavy-lift crane, dynamic positioning (DP-2) technology, and legs featuring spud cans for stability. But the real showstopper? Its ability to transport and install two massive 15 MW turbines simultaneously—a critical feature as turbine sizes balloon to meet efficiency demands. Compliance with Taiwanese regulations ensures it’s tailor-made for the region’s stringent requirements.
The partnership isn’t just about hardware. DFO, Lamprell, and regional clients will collaborate closely on joint engineering and procurement, streamlining the vessel’s deployment. For Taiwan, where offshore wind capacity is set to skyrocket, this vessel could be a game-changer. DFO CEO Polin Chen highlighted its role in delivering “high-quality solutions” for the island’s ambitious wind projects.
As the Asia Pacific region races to meet renewable targets, the NG-9000X vessel represents more than a technical achievement—it’s a symbol of the cross-border collaboration needed to power a greener future. With construction details still under wraps, one thing’s clear: the offshore wind industry is betting big on innovation.
