In a bold move to accelerate the maritime industry’s decarbonisation, Hong Kong-based shipowner Wah Kwong has joined forces with clean energy giant CIMC ENRIC. This groundbreaking partnership aims to pioneer renewable fuel projects, with a laser focus on green methanol—a game-changer for sustainable shipping.
A Strategic Alliance for Sustainable Shipping
On February 26, 2025, the two industry leaders inked a landmark agreement to collaborate on renewable fuel projects, including green methanol bunkering applications, logistics, and delivery services. Wah Kwong will take on the role of offtaker and logistics partner, handling downstream operations and market promotion. Meanwhile, CIMC ENRIC will produce and supply green methanol, ensuring compliance with stringent ISCC and EU regulations.
This partnership isn’t just about fuel—it’s about building a sustainable ecosystem. Wah Kwong’s expertise in maritime logistics and CIMC ENRIC’s cutting-edge clean energy solutions create a synergy that could redefine the future of shipping.
Green Methanol: The Fuel of Tomorrow
CIMC ENRIC is already making waves with its ambitious 50,000 million tons per annum (mtpa) renewable green methanol plant in Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province. Strategically located to serve the Greater Bay Area (GBA), Southern China, and Southeast Asia, the plant is set to go live in the second half of 2025.
Green methanol, produced from renewable sources, is emerging as a key player in the global push to reduce carbon emissions. Its potential to replace traditional marine fuels makes it a cornerstone of the maritime industry’s green transition.
A Vision for a Decarbonised Future
Hing Chao, Executive Chairman of Wah Kwong Maritime Transport, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership: “We’re thrilled to collaborate with CIMC ENRIC and play a pivotal role in the renewable fuels market. This partnership aligns with our mission to drive the marine transition and deliver the sustainable solutions our industry desperately needs.”
Leo Yang, Executive Director and President of CIMC ENRIC, echoed this sentiment: “This collaboration is a milestone for our green methanol business. With Wah Kwong’s expertise, we’re confident in achieving full-chain commercialisation and contributing to the global energy transition.”
The partnership will initially focus on the GBA, with plans to expand globally. Together, Wah Kwong and CIMC ENRIC are not just investing in green methanol—they’re investing in a cleaner, greener future for the maritime industry.
