Sercel: Sentinel MS operating successfully in Ireland

Sercel announced today that its multi-sensor solid streamer, the Sentinel® MS, has been commercially deployed for the first time and is being successfully operated
on a large 3D CGG multi-client survey being conducted by the CGG Geo Coral
in the Southern Porcupine Basin in Ireland.

The Sentinel MS was specifically designed to deliver multi-sensor data sets of exceptional quality to help the industry achieve the best broadband imaging and generate more detailed and accurate images of the subsurface. Its technology relies on a field-proven low-noise hydrophone and two accelerometers offering directional measurements for both cross-line and vertical wave fronts. Used in combination, the hydrophone and the accelerometers meet the challenge of receiver ghost-free acquisition and add to the broadband toolbox to offer the broadest bandwidth seismic data imaging techniques.

Pascal Rouiller, Sercel CEO, said: “This inaugural large 3D survey confirms the Sentinel MS as the state-of-the-art technology streamer for high-end multi-sensor streamer acquisition. We are confident that the Sentinel MS will attract increasing interest from the oil and gas industry as part of its quest to achieve greater processing efficiency and clearer imaging.”

SovComFlot: Naming ceremony for unique icebreaking LNG carrier takes place in St. Petersburg

The naming ceremony for the world’s first icebreaking liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier took place on 3 June 2017. The event was held in the port of Bronka (St. Petersburg) as part of the XXI St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, and was attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The tanker has been built to order for SCF Group to provide year-round transportation for LNG in the difficult ice conditions of the Kara Sea and Gulf of Ob (Yamal LNG project). Christophe de Margerie was commissioned by Sovcomflot on 27 March 2017 following her successful ice trials in the Arctic Ocean.
The LNG carrier was named after Christophe de Margerie, the former CEO of Total, who had played a key role in developing investment decisions and a technological basis for the Yamal LNG project. He had also made a major contribution to the development of Russo-French economic relations in general. The vessel’s godmother was Valentina Matviyenko, Chairperson of the Russian Federation Council. Speaking at the ceremony, she said: “I name this vessel Christophe de Margerie and wish her, her crew and all Sovcomflot seafarers success and accident-free operations. Seven feet under the keel!”

BGP: Over 500Km of 2D Seismic acquired to date in Somaliland

Over 500 kilometers of 2D seismic has been acquired to date by Chinese geophysical service company BGP according to blocks SL-10B and SL-13 operator Genel Energy.

The data which is being acquired in Saraar, Togdheer, Dadmaded, Marodijeh and Hawd regions is part of the Somaliland government owned speculative 2D seismic acquisition project, with the operator purchasing the associated data from the government commenced in March.

The need for acquisition according to Genel has resulted from a surface seep study completed early in 2015 confirmed the outstanding potential offered by this huge acreage position.

Genel is targeting resources of over 1,000 mmbbls in blocks SL-10B and SL-13. The Odewayne block has a similar resource potential to this, targeting in order of 1,000 mmbbls.

Gravity and aeromag has already been acquired and interpreted over the entire 40,000 square km acreage.

This seismic program is the 2nd if its type, a 1st somewhat similar program to what was conducted in offshore Somaliland in 2008 through contracting with TGS-NOPEC.

The current 2D seismic will satisfy the outstanding commitment in the current exploration phase on both licenses. Genel Energy says that any further activity beyond the current exploration phase is discretionary.

Genel has 50 percent interest on the Odewayne Block while Sterling Energy (East Africa) Limited has 34 percent and has the remaining Petrosoma Limited 16%. On the SL-10B/13 block Genel is the operator with 75 percent interest.

Canada: Super-sized seismic activity planned for Newfoundland’s offshore this year

In yet another sign that Newfoundland and Labrador’s oil industry is poised for growth, no fewer than 18 companies that specialize in seismic surveying have filed environmental assessments with the board that regulates the offshore.

A record amount of valuable 3D seismic data will be collected in the coming months, with one company deploying a small fleet of very specialized vessels.

It’s a unique situation in an environment where oil companies throughout the world have tightened the purse strings on exploration, with spending down by 75 per cent from just three years ago, when oil was trading at more than $100 US per barrel.

Oil is now hovering at about half that, yet oil companies continue to search for the next major find in the offshore.

“Based on the activity level here, we’re getting more than a reasonable share of that spending,” said Bob Cadigan, president and CEO of the Newfoundland and Labrador Oil and Gas Industries Association.

“It says that the eyes of explorers are on our offshore and that the prospectivity is really exciting to them.”

Fugro: Fugro Venturer to commence offshore survey campaign

With a maiden voyage that takes her to the deep waters of Ireland’s Atlantic margin and the far North of the Barents Sea, Fugro Venturer is the newest of Fugro’s successful purpose-designed, standardised survey vessels, originally formulated in 2013.

The 72-metre vessel is a platform for technological innovation, where Fugro’s trademark technologies such as OARS (centralised command centres with direct access to offshore survey projects), Back2Base (enabling large amounts of survey data to be sent from offshore vessels to onshore processing centres and clients) and ROAMES (a powerful asset management solution streamlining subsea operations) are radically changing information delivery.

Fugro has secured a significant confirmed work backlog so that a campaign of site and pipeline route surveys, for clients including Aker BP, following commissioning and survey trials. Fugro Venturer is contracted to conduct simultaneous analogue/digital surveys, 3D high resolution seismic and environmental sampling and shallow geotechnical operations. An increased level of weather tolerance will ensure a highly reliable operational programme.

PGS: Launches Large Scale Plastic Collection Concept

PGS has developed a concept for efficient, large-scale collection of plastic in the oceans. The solution uses the inherent benefits of seismic vessels and takes advantage of their air compressors and capabilities for handling large towing configurations.

Each year, eight million tons of plastic ends up in the world’s oceans – equivalent to dumping the contents of one garbage truck into the sea every minute. If no action is taken, this is expected to increase to two garbage trucks per minute by 2030 and four garbage trucks per minute by 20501.

The PGS plastic collection concept consists of a seismic vessel and a support vessel towing booms, in a fan formation, which are connected to a processing unit at the end of the spread.

The uniqueness of the seismic vessel is its large onboard compressors, which usually supply the seismic source. These are instead used to pump air through a ventilated hose, towed at approximately 50 meters water depth between the seismic ship and the support vessel. The air bubbles attach to the submerged plastic which then rises to the sea surface, just like bubbles are attracted to a straw in a glass of sparkling water.
